Luke Slater has become the latest Academy scholar to sign a professional deal and having seen a number of his friends and teammates do so earlier in the season, he says it had been an anxious wait.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen as it was quite a late decision but I am so happy now and it is such a relief. I was nervous about getting my decision and honestly I didn’t expect this.
“I had a good meeting with Darren, Glenn, Nicky and Robbie O’Keefe. It went really well and as I said, I am so pleased.
Slater revealed how he thought that an injury which kept him out for months might have scuppered his chances of earning a deal.
“Earlier this year I was out injured for three months so I couldn’t do myself justice really.
“I was training with the First Team since October and then I got my injury. I felt good prior to that. I was playing well, scoring a few goals and feeling comfortable but I was worried what it would do.
“Thankfully, I think i showed enough in my time on the pitch so I am just grateful and thankful for the opportunity.”
Slater says that the clubs recent youth record provides him with extra belief ahead of joining up with the squad in June.
“It has been great seeing the other young lads get their chance so it definitely gives me confidence. Obviously I know a lot of them too which will make the transition that bit easier.
“The plan to to go home now and take a couple of days off but I want to come back in pre-season flying and give myself the best opportunity possible. I will be getting back to work as soon as possible.
“I want to push on and try to get a place in the squad. I know it will be hard but I have all faith in myself and I know my family does too.”
