Kennedy: "There is nothing better"

With the 90th minute approaching in a tightly-fought contest against MK Dons, Stevenage won a free-kick from 25 yards out, dead central...

Having ran the opposition ragged all throughout the contest, Ben Kennedy stepped up to win it for Stevenage, whipping his strike into the net with a kiss off the crossbar.

It was the latest signature moment from Kennedy who has earned a reputation over the years as a big game, big moment player for the club.

Speaking after the game, Kennedy said he was just delighted to help the team to three points.

"We had a bad result last week and there is nothing better than to bounce back at home against the team that is top of the league. I think we dominated, especially in the second half and I think we were the better side and deserved to get the three points.

"We know on our day that we are as good as anyone in this league. We have got good players that have won promotion and there is no reason why we can’t beat teams like MK Dons. We are just happy enough to get the three points and move onto Swindon now."

So what was going through his mind when stepping up to take it?

"Once I saw it go over the wall I hit it sweet enough and I thought ‘this can go in’ and it did! So, happy days.

"I offered him (Joel) the free-kick and he said ‘no, you hit it’ and then Tims always gives me a wee sweet talk and after that I thought ‘yeah I am hitting this’ and it paid off."

Saturday's comeback wasn't the first time Stevenage have turned a game around from a losing position this season and Kennedy says that once Cuthbert found the equaliser, he felt a winner coming.

"I think we have had this at home a few times where we have gone down. Against Oldham we went down 2-1 and I think we’ve got good experience with people who know how to react. As I said, we have promotion winners and we reacted well again and once we got that second goal I knew we were going to win it.

"We knew we needed to bounce back from last week. Now we are just thinking of the next game. That one is behind us now. Now it is rest, recovery and Swindon on Tuesday."
