Westley: 'We aren't far away'

16 January 2020

Graham Westley says he is confident that Stevenage Football Club will soon get back into both the goalscoring and win columns to help lift the Club away from the foot of the Sky Bet League Two table…

Boro continue to perform well defensively on a consistent basis and the Stevenage boss believes that this platform will soon be bolstered by an improvement going forward.

“We have got to be more positive with our attacking play and more goal focused with our attacking play and we will be," Westley stated.

“I am not worried about what anyone else is doing. In the end, we have got to win some games to get into midtable. What anyone else does will tidy itself up. We have to focus on winning games of football and that is where we are focused.

“We aren’t far away from being a winning football team, you can see that. We have conceded four goals in seven games – that is promotion winning form. At the other end of the pitch, we haven’t done enough and we are doing stuff to change that.

Stevenage have made two signings so far this January – attackers Joe Leesley and Jake Cassidy. Westley is confident that the recent additions will give his side a new edge.

“We have brought in a set piece deliverer in Leesley and his delivery is really good. Our movement and our use of weapons isn’t good enough yet – that is down to me and I will sort that out.

“We have brought a centre forward in to hold the ball up so we can sustain more pressure on sides and give ourselves more opportunity to use our attacking assets.

“We are doing the work that we need to do and we are doing it with urgency but patience. You can make the wrong decisions if you rush in and I don’t want to do that. We are where we are and it’s not that easy to attract people to the football club. You have got to attract people for whom this football club and situation is a real opportunity.

“I like the hunger that the lads are coming in are going to have and I like the talent that they are going to bring into the squad, to bring in assets that we haven’t had before.”

Next up for Boro is an away trip to Cambridge United on Saturday 18th January 2020. Click here for ticket information.
