Stevenage Captain Scott Cuthbert has been awarded the PFA Community Player of the Year Award for 2019/20, after leading the way in player community engagement over the last year...
As part of Mind’s ‘Do One Thing’ campaign, to help mark World Mental Health Day, the Club invited Get Set to Go champion Duncan to The Lamex Stadium to present the award to Scott.
Despite suffering from anxiety, depression and type II diabetes, Duncan joined the Mind in Mid Herts/Stevenage FC Foundation Get Set to Go programme in January 2020 and has credited the sessions to helping improve both his physical and mental state.
His invitation to present the award came as part of his 50th Birthday, as the Club helped him celebrate following the extraordinary progress he has shown over the past 10 months. You can read more about Duncan’s story here.
Cuthbert was chosen as the 2019/20 PFA Community Player of the Year award due to his impressive commitment to representing the club on community visits and initiatives, including during the course of lockdown as part of the Coronavirus Community Careline.
“I am delighted with it,” Cuthbert said. “I don’t think all players really understand how big clubs like this are in the community and the impact they have. I have had plenty of opportunities to get out there and see it for myself.
“It is important to set the example for the rest of the lads to take out that hour or two out of your day, whether that be delivering sandwiches or visiting a local school and speaking to the kids.
“It means a lot to people and it means a lot to the club. There are so many people at the club and Foundation who work so hard behind the scenes to put these events on, so it is part of the captain's job but it is part of everyone’s job too.”
Joe Goude, Stevenage FC Foundation CEO said, "Scott’s been an unbelievable advocate and leader for our community work, not just last season but throughout his time with the Club. Whether it has been attending sessions himself or organising and encouraging other players to get involved in a number of our different projects. It has been fantastic to have Scott’s support and he thoroughly deserves this award."
