A Brief History: Southampton FC

Stevenage take on Southampton U21s on Tuesday night in just the second ever meeting against a Saints side...

The two teams met almost eight years ago in the League Cup, when Southampton romped home to a 4-1 victory at The Lamex Stadium.

Although Stevenage were unbeaten in League One at the time, the visitors were newly promoted to the Premier League and after a goalless first half, the Saints showed their class in the second as they scored three goals without reply, including a stunning 30 yard strike from Jason Puncheon to put Nigel Adkins' side in cruise control heading into the 90th minute.

Then, a moment which has taken on more significance since his tragic passing last year, Michael Thalassitis scored a late consolation to make it 3-1, before Ben Reeves added another for the Saints before the final whistle.

Having come through the Club's Academy and playing just his seventh game for Boro at the age of 19, the goal was a huge moment for both the Club and Thalassitis, which will never be forgotten.
