Stevenage Football Club are faced with the tough test of National League side Yeovil Town this Saturday in the Second Round of this season’s FA Cup at Huish Park…
Kicking off at the later time of 5:30pm, Stevenage face Yeovil in the second round of the FA Cup live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. In the first round Boro earned themselves a replay after drawing 2-2 against MK Dons at Stadium MK. The fixture at The Lamex was a thriller, with Stevenage winning 2-1 thanks to a last-minute Luke Norris penalty. Yeovil had a comfortable first round of the competition with a 5-0 victory against Southern League Premier Division South opposition, Yate Town.
Despite being founded in 1895, Yeovil first competed in the Football League over 100 years later in 2003 after winning the Conference. Two years later they won the League Two title before reaching the Championship with victory in the 2013 League One play-off final. Unfortunately, Yeovil’s stay in the Championship lasted just one season as consecutive relegations soon saw The Glovers in Sky Bet League Two. Their fall through the leagues did not stop there as in the 2018/19 they suffered yet another relegation, returning to non-league once again. They have since been playing in the National League as they fight for their place back in the Football League.
Yeovil currently sit tenth in the National League, two points outside the play-off places. So far this campaign, they have won eight of their seventeen league games, drawn four and lost five. Their current manager is Darren Sarll who previously took charge of Stevenage for two years from 2016 to 2018. In the 2019/20 campaign, Sarll took Yeovil to the National League play-offs, but they fell short in the quarter finals. Their current top scorer is Joe Quigley with six goals in fifteen games so far.
Stevenage and Yeovil are two sides who have been extremely familiar with each other over the years, firstly in non-league competition before the two clubs met regularly in the Football League. It is Saturday’s hosts who have the slightly better win-rate, with Yeovil winning eleven of the thirty-two previous
contests. The sides have drawn thirteen times with Boro winning the remaining eight. The last time these two sides met was in the 2018/19 season as Yeovil travelled to The Lamex before being narrowly defeated 1-0 by Stevenage.
Yeovil Town have played their home games at Huish Park since it opened in August 1990. The stadium holds a capacity of 9,565 with 5,212 seated. In 2008, the ground recorded its highest attendance of 9,527 in a League One fixture between Yeovil and Leeds United. Away fans are typically allocated the Radio Cabs Stand behind one of the goals which is an uncovered terrace.
The club have offered free coach travel for supporters with a Match ticket and will be taking four coaches of fans. For those wishing to drive, parking is available on either side of Huish Park at a cost of £3.
