Stevenage Football Club make the trip to Wiltshire this Wednesday evening for a crucial Sky Bet League Two clash with Ben Garner’s Swindon Town…
Paul Tisdale’s men come into this match with fresh legs as the boxing day fixture with Crawley Town was postponed. Before that, Boro travelled to Salford city for a 1-0 defeat despite the side showing promising signs. As for Swindon, they look for their first league win since the 23rd of November.
Founded in 1879, Swindon have plenty of history to look back on. They were first elected into the Football League in 1920 and remained in the third tier for forty-three years until their promotion into the second division in 1963. Six years later, The Robins won the League Cup after coming out on top against Arsenal in the 1969 final.
They dropped into the fourth tier for the first time in history in the 1981-82 season but were soon promoted four seasons later. In 1993, Glenn Hoddle coached Swindon to the Second Division Play-off final before earning promotion to the top flight for the first time. Unfortunately, Swindon only lasted one season in the premier league as they were relegated at the end of the 1993/94 campaign. Since 2006, they have found themselves promoted and relegated between League One and Two several times, most recently last season as they were relegated out of League One.
Swindon currently find themselves 8th in Sky Bet League Two, level on points with a play-off place. So far this season, they have won nine, drawn six and lost five under the management of Ben Garner. Their current top scorer is Tyreece Simpson with nine in all competitions.
Stevenage and Swindon have met each other fourteen times competitively, with the Robins possessing the better win rate. Swindon have won nine times, with Boro winning four and the sides drawing just once. In this season’s reverse fixture between the two clubs, the score finished 1-1. Ben Coker opened the scoring on the fifty third minute, but a last-minute penalty rescued a point for Swindon.
Swindon have played their home games at the County Ground since 1896. The current capacity is 15,728, all of which are seated, and has been at that number since the 1990s. A record attendance of 32,000 was set in January 1972 in a Third Round FA Cup clash with Arsenal. The stadium has had other uses in the past, including multiple England women and youth matches along with being a concert venue.
The M4 is most convenient for getting to Swindon, but it first requires passage along the A1(M) and M25. At Junction 15, take the A4259 Queens Drive towards Swindon town centre. Continue across one roundabout, before taking the first exit at the next one. This’ll be the A4312 towards Swindon and signposted “Football Traffic”. The ground is on the corner of the Magic Roundabout.
