Phil Wallace's Chairman Notes: Scunthorpe United

7 December 2021

Ahead of tonight's Sky Bet League Two fixture against Scunthorpe United, Phil Wallace addresses Stevenage supporters in the Digital Matchday Programme...

Good evening and welcome to the players and officials of Scunthorpe United...

Since my last programme notes I am pleased to say we have appointed Paul Tisdale to the position of First Team Manager. We have said our sincere thanks to Robbie O’Keefe, Chris and Ronnie for standing in so well whilst we sought to appoint an experienced EFL manager. They did a great job.

Whilst Paul took the reins on Monday, he felt that Robbie was best placed to take the game at Sutton and he took the game away at Yeovil. We know the results of both of those games and it is difficult to accept we are out of both cups now. We dominated the game overall at Sutton but couldn’t score, losing on penalties and the same story repeated itself away to Yeovil, where their one shot on target found the back of the net after a series of defensive mistakes. Personally, I was bitterly disappointed at the result and felt we could have played with more intensity, given the occasion and difference in quality between the two teams. However, that is what the FA Cup is all about and Yeovil deserved their win for their application and desire.

Now we are going into the league campaign with nothing on our minds other than climbing the table. This game is obviously vitally important to both teams and there will be a strong desire from us to win the game and take all three points. Other than Scott being suspended, I believe we now have almost a full squad for Paul to pick from and I am hoping each and every one of our lads will give everything they have for the next two home games so that we can start to move up the league. It is very tight and two or three wins will move any team quickly up the table.

Around the stadium, you will have noticed the new LED screen above the turnstile block in the northeast corner and this replaces the old fixture board which used to be in that position. Using this screen we will hopefully keep folks up to date with our upcoming fixtures and news.  We do have plans to complete the North end with new fencing either side of the stand and that will be in place before the end of this season.

Back to the game – welcome to Paul in his first home fixture for the Club. Let’s get behind him and cheer the lads on to a win, setting us up for another exciting home game on Saturday.

Enjoy the match!
