Girls' Football & Education Pathway Programme announced

10 February 2021

Stevenage FC Foundation is launching a Girls’ Football and Education Programme (GFEP), starting in September 2021, in partnership with Marriotts School...

The programme will allow young female footballers (aged 16-18), the opportunity to blend the academic studies with a minimum of 8 hours coaching a week at the fantastic facilities at Marriotts School in Stevenage and representing Stevenage FC Women in against other professional clubs and college programmes.

Students will have the option to tailor their academic interests as part of Marriotts School sixth form, with a number of A-Level, BTEC and CTEC options available. The aim of the programme is to enhance the women & girls’ pathway at Stevenage FC, allowing local young female footballers the chance to develop on and off the pitch. A variety of personal development workshops will be provided, plus opportunities to gain further external qualifications and access to the Foundation’s NCS programme.

Women & Girls Pathway Manager, Dani Toyn said “This is a partnership and programme we’ve been looking to develop with Marriotts for some time now. We’ve seen our young players in our Girls’ Development Centre grow in the last two seasons, and wanted a local, high quality offer for them as a next step, which will allow them to continue their Stevenage FC journey.

“We understand that young players don’t always want to pursue a career in sport and wanted to offer a number of different academic options so that each player has a bespoke experience that’s right for them and their future aspirations. On the pitch, we’ve seen a number of young players get opportunities with Stevenage FC Women and the aim is to continue this trend with the Football & Education programme.”

Marriotts School Head of Sixth Form, Mike Winter also commented “We are delighted to further develop the strong links we have Stevenage FC through the Girls Football and Education programme. We welcome applicants to join our striving sixth form, where they will have access to high quality teaching from experienced staff, a fantastic curriculum and very strong extended programme of advice and guidance.

“We look forward to working with students providing them with the opportunity to reach and exceed their potential leaving us with the qualifications, skills and attitudes to excel, both in higher educations and the working world.”

A series of virtual open evenings will be held in March to provide more information for prospective students and their parents/guardians.
