Stevenage Football Club welcome Sky Bet League One side Cambridge United to The Lamex Stadium for the final Papa John's Trophy group stage game of the season…
Kicking off at 7pm, Alex Revell’s men aim to progress into the knockout stages of the tournament, with either a win or a draw for Boro securing qualification.
Last time out in the competition, Stevenage defeated Oxford United 2-1 at The Kassam stadium as a result of late goals from Jamie Reid and Luke Norris. Cambridge currently sit at the top of Group H in the Southern Section after wins against Oxford United and Tottenham Under 21s.
Founded in 1912, the opposition hadn’t adopted the name Cambridge United until 1951. Two decades later, The Yellows secured their election into the Football League and lasted thirty-five years before relegation to the Conference in 2005. Cambridge eventually secured promotion back into Sky Bet League Two after winning the 2014 play-off final.
Last campaign, Manager Mark Bonner led United to promotion to Sky Bet League One after finishing as runners up. So far this season Cambridge have had a decent start to life in the third tier of English football, winning five games, drawing seven and losing four. They currently sit in tenth place. Joe Ironside is The Yellows’ current top goal scorer with seven to his name so far. They come into this fixture after a 2-2 draw against Northampton Town in the FA Cup last weekend as well as a 2-0 away win against Morecambe in the league last Tuesday.
The previous results between Stevenage and Cambridge have been extremely varied. Across the twenty-eight competitive contests, Stevenage have won twelve, The Yellows have won eleven with the sides drawing the remaining five.
The first time the two sides met was in the FA Cup round Two in which the score line was 1-1, setting up a replay which Stevenage went on to win. The most recent fixture between the two clubs was in April 2021 when Alex Revell’s men travelled to Abbey Stadium and clinched a 1-0 victory thanks to a second-half Luke Norris goal.
