Stevenage Football Club return to Sky Bet League Two action this Saturday as Colchester United travel from Essex to the Lamex Stadium for a crucial 3pm kick off…

Despite some disappointing league results as of late, Stevenage come into this fixture on the back of an entertaining 2-1 victory earlier in the week against Sky Bet League One opposition MK Dons to progress to the second round of the Emirates FA Cup. Currently sat 21st, Boro look to build on this impressive performance in order to climb up the league table.

Founded in 1937, Colchester United were first elected to the Football League in 1950. For forty years they enjoyed football in the Third and Fourth Division before briefly falling into non-league. In 1992 The U’s achieved promotion back to the Football League after winning the Conference title in their second campaign in non-league. They have since been regulars in the Football League and even achieved their highest league finish in the club’s history in the 2006/07 season, finishing 10th in The Championship. Since 2016, Colchester have played in Sky Bet League Two.

Currently sat 19th in Sky Bet League Two, Colchester, like Stevenage, aim to climb up the table with a win this Saturday. Since May of this year, Hayden Mullins has been in permanent charge of the Essex club after briefly taking the interim role. So far this campaign, he has coached his side to four wins, five draws and six losses across fifteen league games. Colchester look to improve on a disappointing campaign last season which saw the club finish 20th. Their current top scorer is Freddie Sears with six goals in all competitions, including three in his last three games.

Stevenage and Colchester have been rather familiar with each other over the past decade, facing up against each other seventeen times. The first encounter between the two sides was in 2011 when Stevenage travelled to Essex and came away with an outstanding 6-1 victory. Since then, however, Colchester have been able to pick up more wins, with nine out of the seventeen going The U’s way. The most recent match between these two sides was a 0-0 draw at The Lamex in January of this year behind closed doors.
