Phil Wallace's Chairman Notes: Stevenage vs Colchester United

20 November 2021

Ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League Two fixture against Colchester United, Phil Wallace addresses Stevenage supporters in the Digital Matchday Programme...

Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Colchester United...

Well, what a game that was on Tuesday night! I’m in the US and the video stream wasn’t available so I had to listen to the live commentary. Someone should have told me I’d need blood pressure tablets! What a game – a typical FA Cup tie full of incidents and all the things we love to see in a football match. If you paid to watch that, then I’m absolutely sure you were entertained. If you stayed to the end, the emotion created in extra time by a last-minute penalty to us was off the charts. Fair play to Luke for stepping up, knowing what was at stake and knowing it was a ‘must score’. Cometh the hour etc. And, what about the goal – how Listy got up twice and played an inch perfect pass to Cokes I’ll never know. The cross in and the header from Jamie were textbook perfect. At the end, with us through, I needed a stiff drink. What a game!

Now, we’re back to the real show and this team has now shown what it can do. We need the same sense of urgency, the same application, the same excitement and the same momentum against Colchester as we saw Tuesday.

Our opponents today are in a similar position to us. They’re not happy with how their season has gone thus far any more than we are – and there’s a lot at stake. Both teams will want the three points on offer today and I’m looking forward to this game immensely. Robbie and Chris will take the game again today and can hopefully build on our performance in midweek and get the result we all want. My thanks to them for stepping in at such short notice and to Ronnie who is working with the First Team lads during the week. I think everyone can feel the team unite. None of us wanted to lose Revs and Dean but we all feel that we can do better and today is another chance to show that we can.

We have funds available to strengthen the squad in January if a new manager feels that is necessary, but we are keen to show our belief and confidence in this group. We will be a few lads short today for various reasons, but that is an opportunity for others to stake a claim on the shirt.

The atmosphere sounded magnificent on Tuesday. Let’s create that noise and support for the lads again. Enjoy the game!
