Phil Wallace's Chairman Notes: Leyton Orient

22 October 2021

Ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League Two fixture against Leyton Orient, Phil Wallace addresses Stevenage supporters in the Digital Matchday Programme...

Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Leyton Orient...

I think I have always said that whenever we play Orient, I am compromised because this was my boyhood team. Their recent changes off the pitch, introducing US investors, is a great move and I always enjoy talking with Nigel (Travis). However, my past was pushed aside by my total commitment to Stevenage long ago, so that is firmly in place and clear.

I am desperate for us to win and continue to work hard to get us on winning ways. I was not happy at all after the loss at Northampton. Silly, basic errors gave goals away and I think Northampton were as surprised as us at our nervousness and the way we gifted all three of their goals. That has to stop, and it has to stop now. I am sure there will be changes for the game, not just in personnel but in tenacity, desire, confidence and commitment.

I want to see the attractive football we saw at the start of the season but tempered with safety first and resolute defending at the back. I do not want to see kamikaze football at the back or people falling over when they should be strong and decisive.

Sometimes, there comes a moment where you put the past behind you and that moment is now. We have an honest management group and honest players. They are hand-picked by Revs and Dean and are very talented, but they need to regain confidence in themselves and go for it. The trepidation shown recently has to be banished and replaced by grit and determination.

We are 13 games in – a few wins now makes a huge difference in the look of the league table. We are one point a game for those 13 games and we are better than that, so it is time to show it.

Off the pitch we are in really good shape. All the stadium work is complete, our finances are strong and improvements to the training ground continues.

Let’s hear you in support of the lads. Enjoy the game!

- Phil Wallace
