Played for both: Boro & Latics

14 October 2021

We take a look at some players over the years who have represented both Stevenage and Oldham Athletic ahead of this Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two Fixture…

Arguably the most notable name to have had decent spells at both Stevenage and Oldham is Filipe Morais. The Portuguese-born winger joined Boro from Oldham in 2012 after the club reached the League One Play-offs the season before, evidently attracting Morais. He had spent two years with the Latics before joining and gained quality League One experience. Across the two seasons, he had made 68 appearances, scoring eight times. His time at Stevenage started extremely positively, scoring four goals in as many games. In the 2013/14 campaign, the winger scored eight goals in thirty-five appearances.

In 2003/04, 6ft 3 Congolese striker Calvin Zola was on loan at Oldham Athletic due to chances at his parent club Newcastle being limited. During his loan spell, he featured 28 times and scored eight goals. A decade later, Zola joined Stevenage and was unfortunately hit with injuries, only making six appearances all season before retiring in 2015.

More recently, fellow target-man Jake Cassidy signed for Boro in January 2020 after appearing for a plethora of clubs. One of those include Oldham, for whom he played for throughout the 2015/16 but failed to find the back of the net. During his short spell for Stevenage he scored one goal in nine starts. (This one).

In the summer of 2013, Graham Westley signed French striker Oumare Tounkara in an attempt to bolster the squad’s attacking options for the season ahead. Tounkara made seven starts and ten substitute appearances before being loaned out to Grimsby Town in the January transfer window. On his debut for Boro he played the whole 90 minutes against Oldham, for whom he had played for from 2010 to 2012.

In 2004, Lee Barnard signed for Stevenage on a one-month loan from Tottenham. The striker scored one goal in four games before returning to Spurs. His career included playing for Oldham in the second half of 2012/13 season, scoring three goals in fourteen games. Ten years after his first spell at Stevenage, Barnard returned to The Lamex Stadium and netted a trio of goals across eight appearances.
