Match Preview: Stevenage FC vs Harrogate Town

28 January 2022

Stevenage Football Club welcome Simon Weaver’s Harrogate Town from Yorkshire down to The Lamex Stadium this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off in Sky Bet League Two…

Paul Tisdale’s side aim for their fifth match unbeaten in a row after picking up wins against Walsall and Crawley, along with draws against Sutton and Hartlepool in the last three weeks. Harrogate, on the other hand, picked up a 3-0 win against Oldham in their most recent Sky Bet League Two fixture after a run of four league defeats.

Nicknamed The Sulphurites, Harrogate Town were originally formed in 1914 and were immediately entered into the Northern League. In 1927 they were crowned champions of the Yorkshire League before disbanding in 1932. Harrogate Hotspurs were founded in 1935 and changed their name to Harrogate Town after World War Two.

The club were founding members of the Northern Premier League’s First Division in 1987 and won the title in 2002. Two years later, Harrogate were founder members of the Conference North and earned promotion out of the division in 2018. Harrogate were then the victors in the 2020 National League Play-off final, securing a place in the Football League for the first time in history.

In their second ever season in the Football League, Harrogate Town have had a decent campaign as they find themselves 12th in the table. Under the management of Simon Weaver, the club have won nine, lost nine and drawn six in Sky Bet League Two this season. Their current top scorer is Luke Armstrong with ten goals in all competitions.

Stevenage and Harrogate Town have come face to face competitively just three times, with the first encounter coming in 2020. Across the three matches, Boro are unbeaten and have also never conceded a goal against Saturday’s opponents. The only goal to ever be scored in this fixture occurred at The Lamex last season as Elliott List contributed to a 1-0 victory. The reverse fixture this season ended in a 0-0 draw at The EnviroVent Stadium.
