Match Preview: Stevenage FC vs Sutton United

14 January 2022

Stevenage Football Club welcome Matt Gray’s Sutton United to The Lamex Stadium for a 3pm kick off in Sky Bet League Two this Saturday…

Paul Tisdale’s men look to build on last Saturday’s impressive performance which saw Stevenage earn a 3-1 victory against Walsall through goals from Chris Lines and Jake Taylor along with an own goal. As for Sutton, they defeated Exeter 2-1 in their most recent league fixture before advancing to the Quarter Finals of the Papa John’s Trophy three days later. Despite their good form so far, The U’s have failed to win away from home for two months.

Sutton United were founded in 1898 and made a name for themselves as a well-established non-league club. Despite being 123 years old, Sutton had never entered the Football League. That was until the end of last season as The Yellows finished top of the National League, capping it off with a 3-0 victory against Hartlepool. Before that, Sutton gained some fame in the 2016/17 campaign with their incredible FA Cup run. They became only the 9th non-league side to reach the 5th round of the competition since 1945 before being knocked out by Arsenal at Gander Green Lane in the Round of Sixteen.

The Yellows are currently under the management of Matt Gray who led them to their first Football League Promotion. So far this campaign they have had a very promising debut season in Sky Bet League Two. Gray’s side have won twelve of their twenty-three league games, drawing three and losing eight. Sutton certainly haven’t been short of goals this season, with eleven different players finding themselves on the score sheet at least once so far. Topping the charts is David Ajiboye with six in all competitions.

Stevenage and Sutton have met each other competitively ten times in the past, with not much splitting the two sides in terms of results. Both teams have won four previous contests each and the remaining two ended in draws. This season’s reverse fixture saw Sutton pick up all three points despite an Elliott List opener. Then, the sides drew each other in the Papa John’s Trophy, with The Yellows winning on penalties at Gander Green Lane.
