Match Preview: Stevenage FC vs Walsall FC

7 January 2022

Stevenage Football Club continue their quest to climb the Sky Bet League Two table in a clash with Walsall this Saturday at The Lamex Stadium…

Paul Tisdale’s men come into this fixture after a tough test in Gloucestershire, which saw the league leaders Forest Green come away with three points. On the other hand, Walsall’s last game was a six-goal thriller at Bescot Stadium, ending 3-3 against Newport thanks to a 90th minute equaliser for The Saddlers.

Saturday’s opponents were formed as Walsall Town Swifts in 1888 before becoming founding members of the Football League’s Second division in 1892. Nine years later, they failed re-election and spent two decades outside the Football League. Finally, in 1921 they were invited to help form the Football League Third Division North where they would remain for thirty even years before being founding members of the Fourth Division.

The next few decades would involve several relegations and promotions between the fourth, third and second divisions resulting in The Saddlers ending up in Sky Bet league Two in 2019 after an eleven year stay in League One. So far this campaign, they have won seven, drawn eight and lost seven in the league, currently sitting in 13th place under the management of Matt Taylor. Their current top scorer is George Miller with seven goals in all competitions.

Stevenage and Walsall have previously met ten times, with the first fixture between the two clubs ending in a 0-0 draw in 2011. Overall, Boro have won twice, with the Saddlers winning three times and the sides drawing the remaining five. Despite defeating Stevenage three times in the past, Walsall have never won at The Lamex. The reverse fixture between the sides this season ended 1-0 to Walsall at The Bescot stadium back in August.
