First-place Boro welcome third-place Cobblers to The Lamex Stadium tomorrow for a crucial clash in Sky Bet League Two…
Steve Evans’ side sit top of Sky Bet League Two after fourteen games, collecting ten wins. Despite scoring three less than Northampton in league fixtures, Stevenage have conceded just eleven compared to The Cobblers’ fourteen. Last weekend, Boro travelled to Kent and picked up a point against Evans’ former side Gillingham.
Northampton Town supporters would’ve felt hard done by at the end of last season, as on the final day Bristol Rovers’ 7-0 win over Scunthorpe denied the Cobblers automatic promotion to Sky Bet League One. This season Jon Brady’s side are undoubtedly one of the favourites for promotion and will prove to be a threat to Boro’s thirteen-game win streak at The Lamex Stadium.
So far this campaign, Northampton have earned eight wins from fourteen, as well as three draws and three losses. Most recently, The Cobblers travelled to East London and picked up a hard-earned draw against second-placed Leyton Orient.
Jon Brady took over as permanent Northampton boss in May 2021 after spending five years as a coach in the club’s academy. Brady featured for Stevenage as a player in the early 2000s, making over fifty appearances.
Boro and the Cobblers have met on fifteen occasions in the past, with Northampton proving to be somewhat of a ‘bogey team’ for the Hertfordshire outfit. The Cobblers have won twelve of the fifteen contests, with Stevenage winning just one.
That victory came in the 2014/15 campaign as goals from Chris Whelpdale and Simon Walton contributed to a 2-1 win at The Lamex Stadium. The first ever meeting between the sides was back in 2005 as a Non-League Boro held a Football League Northampton to a 2-2 draw, earning a replay in the FA Cup Second Round.
Geoff Eltringham has been appointed as Match Referee for tomorrow’s fixture with Andrew Aylott and Greg Read as his Assistants as well as Neil Hair as Fourth Official. Eltringham has officiated just three matches so far this campaign, handing out eight yellow cards.
