Match Preview: Stevenage vs Wycombe Wanderers

20 September 2022

Stevenage welcome Sky Bet League One opposition Wycombe Wanderers to The Lamex Stadium for a Tuesday night Papa John’s Trophy clash…

Boro take a break from Sky Bet League Two action as attention turns to the Papa John’s Trophy, where a victory will see Steve Evans’ side advance into the knockout stages.

Last time out in the competition, Stevenage travelled to Peterborough United and won 2-1 through Carl Piergianni’s 84th minute winner on London Road.

Wycombe Wanderers play their football in Sky Bet League One after a brief one-season stint in the Championship in the 2020/21 campaign. Last season, Wycombe finished sixth and reached the Play-Off Final but fell short to Sunderland who were subsequently promoted to The Championship. The Chairboys have opened this campaign with a mixed bag of results with three wins, two draws and four losses leading them to sit in sixteenth place.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth took over as Chairboys boss in 2012 after putting on the Wycombe shirt himself for three years prior. Ainsworth is currently second in the longest-serving managers rankings in England after spending just short of a decade in the role. Wycombe’s top scorer so far this season is 21-year-old Anis Mehmeti with five goals to his name.

Boro and The Chairboys have met on fourteen occasions in the past, but tonight’s fixture is a first between the two sides in the EFL Trophy. Stevenage have recorded five wins, three draws and six losses against Wycombe with the most recent fixture ending in a penalty shootout victory for tonight's visitors in last season’s Carabao Cup.

Stevenage’s best victory over Wycombe came in the 2016/17 campaign as Darren Sarll’s Boro won 3-0 at The Lamex Stadium through goals from Tom Pett, Steven Schumacher and Matty Godden.
