Steve Evans: “We need our supporters more than ever on Saturday”

13 September 2023

We caught up with Gaffer Steve Evans this morning, reviewing Saturday’s draw with Carlisle United and looking ahead to Charlton Athletic at The Lamex Stadium…

Stevenage currently sit top of League One for the first time in the Club’s history, but the boss is adamant that we must continue to learn and improve.

“It is amazing how far we have come in my seventeen months here”, said Steve Evans.

“From second to bottom in League Two to the top of League One, yet everyone went home disappointed on Saturday having not won despite total dominance.

“We gave away two easily preventable goals, but we will get back on the training ground and learn.“The progress in such a short time is massive, but I feel we have so much more to come.

“Carl Piergianni scored a perfectly good goal to kill the game, but the assistant referee gave offside. Not a decision I agreed with, and on review, neither did his bosses at the EFL”.

Up next for Steve Evans’ men is former Premier League side Charlton Athletic at The Lamex Stadium, who recently appointed Michael Appleton as manager.

“Charlton Athletic are a huge club in League One. What comes with that is top players, outstanding resources to build a team and tremendous support who travel everywhere to support their team.

“We know the size of our task on Saturday, and they also have a new manager to add to our challenge. The playing squad at The Valley is top class, so we need to make sure we are better in both boxes than last Saturday. Charlton will fight for automatic promotion this season, so it is another huge ask of our lads.

“The stadium will likely be sold out, the atmosphere will be electric and hopefully what we see is one of our top performances - it will be needed.

“We need our supporters more than ever on Saturday. Hopefully, we'll see you there!”

It’s been a fantastic start to life in League One for Stevenage, despite numerous players missing for lengthy periods of time through injury.

“Our treatment room has been overflowing in the last six weeks, but we hope that it’s starting to ease. We have gone many weeks with four fit substitutes, so it’s a huge credit to the boys who have been available.

“Hopefully, we get a few back soon - maybe even one or two for Saturday. We need the lads fit. They are all big players for us”.

The squad now have a free week on the training ground in the build-up to Saturday’s game.

“We will continue to work hard. We must continue to improve, learn and keep focused in a league that punishes mistakes.

“The lads buy into everything we introduce, and they deserve the most credit. A caring and talented dressing room is what we have, and I am proud to lead them.

“Points are hard to accumulate consistently, so each one – or three - is hard-earned.

“At home and away, we need a steely determination to win. At The Lamex, with our supporters' help, we can continue with our excellent performances and points return”.
