Match Preview: Cambridge United (H)

26 February 2024

Stevenage arrive at The Lamex Stadium for the second time in four days as Cambridge United come to town for the rearranged League One fixture…

This clash against local rivals was postponed back in December, but now the two sides finally meet on a Tuesday night under the lights at The Lamex Stadium. The game is expected to be played in front of a capacity crowd, so it is sure to be a thrilling evening full of entertainment.

Stevenage come into this match off the back of a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. It was Carl Piergianni who scored the game’s only goal, as his first half left-footed finish made the difference. Boro will be looking for another three points on Tuesday evening in order to leapfrog Oxford United and enter the play-off places.

This season’s reverse fixture against the U’s ended in Stevenage’s favour, as Jordan Roberts gave us the lead after 27 minutes before Jamie Reid’s winner in the final 10 wrapped up the 2-1 victory.

The Opposition

Cambridge United have had quite an up-and-down campaign so far, and with thirteen games remaining, they sit just five points above the drop zone. The U’s are placed 17th in the table, after winning just 10 of their 33 league games this season, and losing 15.

They have hit a rough patch of form as of late, having won just one of their last five league games. That win came away to relegation-threatened Carlisle United, as the U’s earned a thrilling 4-0 victory.

On Saturday, Cambridge hosted local rivals, Peterborough United, and fell to an unfortunate defeat, as the Posh’s Ephron Mason-Clark scored the game’s only goal.

Cambridge’s away form this season has arguably been their biggest downfall in League One, having won just three of their 15 away games in the league. Boro will be hoping to capitalise on this statistic and make it three in 16.

Stevenage academy graduate, Fejiri Okenabirhie, is Cambridge’s top scorer this season, with nine goals to his name in all competitions, but the forward has been unavailable for the last couple months through injury.

The Manager

Interim Manager, Barry Corr, will be in charge of the U’s for Tuesday’s clash at The Lamex Stadium, after the departure of Neil Harris to Millwall last week. This is Corr’s second temporary spell in charge this season, after taking over the side before Harris’ appointment back in December. As a player, Corr won two League Two promotions, one with Swindon Town and the other with Southend United.

Officials

Alex Chilowicz has been appointed Match Referee for Tuesday’s clash, with Daniel D’Urso and Declan O’Shea as his Assistants, and Ravel Cheosiaua as Fourth Official. Chilowicz is a former MLS referee, who officiated 237 games in America’s top-flight division. He is yet to reveal his red card in the English game, having begun his EFL officiating journey in December.
