Played for both: Boro & The Exiles

28 October 2021

We take a look at some of the players who have represented both Stevenage and Newport County over the years, ahead of the important Sky Bet League Two clash this Saturday…

In July 2015, Stevenage signed defender Fraser Franks in order to bolster their defensive options. Franks finished the 2015/16 season with 42 appearances, picking up the Players’ Player of the Year award at the end-of-season presentation night. The defender went on to spend two additional seasons at the club, making 120 appearances and scoring eight goals.

At the end of his three-year stay at Boro, Franks signed for Newport County and quickly became a regular starter for the Exiles. He made thirty-four appearances which included captaining his side in a victory at Rodney Parade against Premier League opposition, Leicester City in the FA Cup third round.

Charlie Griffin joined Newport in February 2007 before spending a year and a half with the Exiles. In the 2007/08 season, Griffin was the club’s top scorer, netting twenty in all competitions. One year after departing from Newport, the striker signed for Stevenage after proving his goal-scoring ability in non-league. Griffin scored fifteen times in the 2009/10 campaign, including a vital goal in the game which saw Boro achieve their first ever promotion to the Football League. In January 2011, Griffin resigned for Newport on loan until the end of the season.

Similar to Griffin, Yemi Odubade played a huge role in Stevenage’s 2009/10 title-winning campaign. The Nigerian ended the campaign with sixteen goals, which led to him being the club’s top goal-scorer for the season. Odubade was popular amongst the Boro faithful, making a total of sixty-eight appearances for the club. The forward signed for Newport County on loan in January 2011, making eleven appearances and netting once for the Exiles.

With Griffin and Odubade departing from Stevenage for loan spells at Newport, Craig Reid came in from the welsh side, for a record-fee at the time, to add to Graham Westley’s attacking options midway through the 2010-11 campaign. The striker had made a name for himself during his time at Newport, scoring 66 goals in 112 appearances in all competitions. For Stevenage, Reid started all three play-off games at the end of the 2010-11 season and was a regular name in the starting eleven the following season. In total, Reid made 57 appearances for Boro, scoring eight times.

More recently, Ben Kennedy was a versatile forward who came through the academy at Stevenage before catching the eye of Graham Westley and making his senior debut at eighteen years old. The Northern Irishman went on to spend five senior years at Stevenage, making over 150 appearances and scoring thirty-one goals. In January 2019, Kennedy signed for Newport County before making eleven appearances for the Exiles.

Report: Newport County 5-0 Stevenage

30 October 2021

A day to forget in South Wales…

Alex Revell named the exact same eighteen who drew with Leyton Orient last weekend. Adam Smith kept his place between the sticks, fronted by a back five of Brad Barry, Luther James-Wildin, Scott Cuthbert, Luke Prosser and Ben Coker.

Jake Taylor, Chris Lines and Jake Reeves were the three in the middle of the park, with Luke Norris and Elliott List up front.

In a day where the rain and the sunshine would battle it out in the build-up to kick-off, the game started in a similarly level manner. Back in the purple third strip, Stevenage had the first sight at goal of the game through Bradley Barry. After picking the ball up inside the Newport half, the right wing-back drove towards the Exiles’ goal but could only fire over the woodwork. That chance and a number of corners were Boro’s best chances to get ahead in the game.

However, twelve minutes in, it was all too familiar to the past trips to Oldham and Northampton. Robbie Willmott’s cross was not dealt with properly by the defending Boro, before the ball dropped to Dom Telford to tap in from two yards out. Not the start Alex Revell’s men had hoped for.

With their backs up, Stevenage pushed high once again looking for that immediate leveller. Elliott List did well to win a free kick on the edge of the Newport box a matter of minutes later, only for Chris Lines to strike the head of Mickey Demetriou and clear.

Luke Norris went close five minutes later after being slipped through by Jake Taylor, but was denied by a strong left hand from Newport stopper Joe Day.

Just before the half hour mark, Boro were two behind. Oliver Cooper gained possession in midfield before picking out Dominic Telford on the edge of the box, whose effort deflected past Adam Smith. Stevenage now had a mountain to climb as the rain started to pour.

Five minutes later, it was three and near enough impossible to see any way back into the game for Alex Revell’s men. Courtney Baker-Richardson picked the ball up on the corner of the area from Dominic Telford and fired past Smith into the far top corner. It seemed as if the hosts had only had three shots on goal in the first half, but Stevenage had conceded all three.

Half-time came and Stevenage needed a miracle to gain anything from the second half.

Bruno Andrade and Terence Vancooten were introduced for Chris Lines and Luke Prosser at the break, as Alex Revell something drastically different was needed in the next 45.

Three minutes into the restart, it was four. Dom Telford secured his hat-trick with a finish from the edge of the area into the top corner.

Six minutes into the restart, it was five. Finn Azaz.

Max Melbourne took the place of Ben Coker just after the half hour mark.

Jake Reeves went close to a consolation when Elliott List cut the ball back after taking on the goalkeeper, but Newport defended their clean sheet well in a disappointing day for Stevenage.

A thank you to the 92 Boro fans who made the journey, as focus now turns to MK Dons in the FA Cup next weekend.
