Boro have just eight games remaining in Sky Bet League One this season, and each one is as vital as the next. On Saturday, Stevenage meet with familiar foes, Carlisle United, who earned promotion to this division alongside Boro last season.

The play-off race continues to be incredibly competitive. Stevenage currently sit eighth in the table and are two points outside the play-off places but have one game in hand over all of their play-off rivals.

Stevenage will be looking to return to winning ways at Brunton Park, after suffering two defeats last week. Last weekend, Boro were unfortunately defeated by a single goal as Leyton Orient left The Lamex with all three points, but Steve Evans and his men will look to put things right with a big performance against Carlisle United.

The Opposition

It is safe to say that Carlisle have an incredibly tough task on their hands in terms of surviving in League One this season, as they currently sit at the bottom of the league, 16 points adrift of safety.

The Cumbrians have won just five of their 38 league games this season and are gradually getting closer to relegation back to the fourth tier. They have lost their last four games but did manage to find the back of the net in all but one of them.

Carlisle’s last win came at the end of February as they travelled to Burton Albion. It was Paul Huntington’s first-half goal which made the difference as they picked up a hard-earned 1-0 victory.

This season’s reverse fixture with Stevenage ended in a 2-2 draw at The Lamex Stadium. Boro were 2-1 up by the 90th minute thanks to a Jamie Reid brace, but Joe Garner’s late leveller meant that both sides took home a point.

The Manager

Paul Simpson has been Carlisle’s boss since February 2022, returning for his second managerial spell at the club. At the time of his appointment, Carlisle were in the relegation zone, but Simpson guided them to safety, before making the League Two play-off final in the following season.

Simpson’s Cumbrians then overcame Stockport County at Wembley Stadium via a penalty shootout to earn promotion to League One.

The Stadium

Brunton Park has been the home of Carlisle United since it opened back in 1909, and currently has a capacity of 17,949. A record attendance at Brunton Park was set in 1970 as 27,603 supporters were in attendance. The ground is just a twenty-minute walk from Carlisle Station.

Officials

Daniel Middleton has been appointed Match Referee for Saturday’s game with Matthew Sowerby and Lewis Raper as his Assistants, and Thomas Parsons as Fourth Official. Middleton has dished out 81 yellow cards and five reds in 25 games so far this season.
