Super Cup Northern Ireland 2023 review

7 August 2023

Our Under 2009 squad represented Stevenage Football Club at this year’s SuperCup NI 2023 between July 23rd and July 29th 2023…

Academy Manager Jorden Gibson commented, “I thought the tour was an outstanding experience for all involved. The Academy staff were thoroughly impressed by the boy’s professional attitude and commitment, considering that this was the first time some of them were away from their parents.

“The players created memories that will stay with them for life”. He added, “I would like to thank Paul Dale for his diligent operation on this, the staff and the travelling parents. Everyone involved was a real credit to Stevenage FC”.

The tournament saw teams drawn into four groups of four in our age group.

Our boys finished second in their group, winning two games and narrowly losing to a strong County Armagh team (2-1). Our two victories came against FC America (2-1) and County Londonderry (1-0).

The semi-final saw Stevenage FC matched against a familiar Category Two opponent in Charlton Athletic, who defeated our young lads 4-1.

Stevenage finished the week with a third and fourth-place play-off against Scottish Premier side Glasgow Rangers. A competitive game that ended 3-3 before losing on penalties.

Youth Development Phase Lead Paul Dale commented, “Overall, the trip was a massively successful tour. The lads were a pleasure to travel with, coach and help them through games. They’ve learnt so much about not only themselves but about each other and tournament football.

The Academy staff all agreed that the Super Cup Northern Ireland is a top-quality tournament, run and organised professionally with precision”.
