Stevenage travel to Highbury Stadium this Saturday for a first-ever clash with Fleetwood Town…
Boro have won their last five games in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last seven, so will be going into Saturday’s game full of confidence. Last weekend, Lincoln City came to town with a new manager in charge, but were unable to overcome Steve Evans and his men, with the hosts winning 1-0.
Stevenage sit fourth in the table after winning nine of their first eighteen games in League One and undoubtedly find themselves in a race for the play-offs. Number 19, Jamie Reid, has been on fire this season, having scored 14 goals in all competitions and already matching his impressive tally from last season.
The Opposition
Fleetwood have had a disappointing start to the League One campaign as they find themselves inside the relegation zone. However, they appear to be finding their feet in recent weeks under new manager, Lee Johnson.
Before Johnson’s appointment in mid-September, the side had failed to win a single league game, but the former Sunderland boss has turned things around and guided his men to four league wins.
Their most recent match was at home to Exeter City in League One and they put on an extremely dominant display, winning 3-0 with Ryan Broom, Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu and Phoenix Patterson getting on the scoresheet in the first half. The Fishermen’s top scorer is Jack Marriott with five to his name this season.
Played for Both
Just six players have appeared for both Stevenage and Fleetwood in the past, with perhaps the most notable being ex-Boro captain Mark Roberts. The centre-half earned legendary status at Stevenage before signing for Fleetwood in July 2013. Roberts went on to spend two full seasons with the club before making 60 league appearances.
Steven Schumacher also spent two years at Fleetwood and was a teammate of Roberts’. The duo reached the League Two play-off final in 2014 with The Fishermen and overcame Burton Albion at Wembley.
Max Clark was a big part of Stevenage’s promotion winning squad last season, but he also featured for Fleetwood in the 2021/22 campaign. Other players to have appeared for both clubs include Elliot Osborne, Jamille Matt and Alex Reid.
The Stadium
Fleetwood Town have called Highbury Stadium their home since it opened in 1939. The ground has a capacity of 5,327, with a record attendance of 6,150 being set in 1965. Away supporters are typically housed in the Percy Ronson Terrace, which holds a capacity of 831.
Officials
Christopher Pollard has been appointed Match Referee for Saturday’s game with Simon Clayton and Richard Wigglesworth as his Assistants, and Alex Gray as Fourth Official. Pollard has handed out 54 yellow cards and two reds in 11 games so far this season.
