Attention now lies on the oldest national football competition in the world, with Stevenage looking for another entertaining cup run. Last season’s FA Cup campaign will be remembered for years to come by Stevenage fans, after wins against King’s Lynn and Gateshead awarded Boro a tie with Aston Villa in the third round.
The hosts took the lead at Villa Park, but a stunning final five minutes saw Stevenage complete a comeback and earn one of the competition’s biggest ever upsets.
The Opposition
Tranmere Rovers will be disappointed in how they have kicked off their League Two campaign, having won just three of their first sixteen league games which sees them sit inside the relegation zone. The Super White Army will be hoping for an upset victory on Saturday as a consolation.
Their away form in League Two has been extremely poor, losing all eight of their away fixtures and scoring just four goals. Tranmere did pick up one victory away from home in cup competition, albeit via a penalty shootout, as they knocked Barnsley out of the Carabao Cup in the first round back in August.
As for the FA Cup, Tranmere have won four out of their last five first-round ties. Last campaign, they fell at the first hurdle in a 2-1 away defeat to Carlisle United. The Super White Army’s best FA Cup record came in the early 2000s, when they reached three quarter finals in the space of five seasons.
The Manager
Nigel Adkins was appointed interim manager in September following the sacking of Ian Dawes, and less than two months later he was handed the job on a permanent basis. The experienced boss has managed a whole host of clubs in the Football League, with his most illustrious spell being at Southampton who he guided to the Premier League from League One via back-to-back promotions.
Officials
Neil Hair has been appointed Match Referee for Saturday’s game with Joseph Stokes and Scott Williams as his Assistants, and Aaron Farmer as Fourth Official. Mr Hair has dished out thirty-two yellow cards in eight games so far this campaign and is yet to reveal his red.
