Match Preview: Wycombe Wanderers (H)

10 October 2023

Stevenage take a break from league action as they welcome Wycombe Wanderers to The Lamex Stadium for an EFL Trophy clash…

Southern Group C of this season’s EFL Trophy sees Stevenage sit in third place with one point. Boro travelled to Southwest London to face AFC Wimbledon in the first round of group stage fixtures and earned a 1-1 draw through a Jamie Reid penalty. A penalty shootout followed to determine who would pick up the extra point in the group, with Wimbledon coming out on top.

Boro and The Chairboys met in last season’s EFL trophy as well, with the fixture being held at The Lamex Stadium. Danny Rose’s brace was followed by Terence Vancooten’s only goal for the club so far, as Stevenage earned a 3-0 victory in the group stage.

The Opposition

Wycombe began their EFL Trophy campaign very positively as they met with Crystal Palace’s Under 21s at Adams Park. The game looked destined to finish goalless despite Wycombe’s domination, but a penalty to the hosts in injury time was converted by Luke Leahy, awarding the Chairboys all three points.

As for Wycombe’s league campaign, they sit seventh in Sky Bet League One just two points behind Stevenage after winning six of their first eleven games. The Chairboys come into tonight’s game off the back of a delightful performance away to Fleetwood on the weekend. Goals from Dale Taylor (x2), Freddie Potts and Luke Leahy ensured the 4-1 triumph.

The Manager

Matt Bloomfield is nothing short of a Wycombe Wanderers legend, having made roughly five hundred appearances for the club, scoring forty goals across nineteen years of his playing career. Six months after retiring as a player, he was appointed Head Coach of Colchester United in September 2022. In February of this year, the Wycombe job became vacant with Bloomfield returning to his former club.

Officials

Daniel Middleton is the man with the whistle tonight, with Declan O’Shea and David Harrison as his Assistants, and Abigail Byrne as Fourth Official. Middleton has handed out twenty-seven yellow cards and two reds in nine games so far this campaign.
