Steve Evans: Supporters were outstanding – we need more of the same

26 February 2024

Following Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wycombe at The Lamex, Manager Steve Evans looks forward to the Cambridge United clash tomorrow night…

Carl Piergianni’s first half strike earned Boro’ all three points as a run of four games with a win was ended, taking Stevenage to one point from the play-off places.

“It was a really tough game against an opponent who has just won the right to play in a Wembley final”, said The Gaffer. "They are full of good players, and we were not near our best but of course it was a very important three points.

“Playing against ten men is always a difficult thing to overcome. Everton conceded against Brighton on Saturday in a similar scenario so to stay strong and see it through is credit to the lads”.

It’s a quick turnaround as Steve Evans’ men get ready for a second game at The Lamex in four days, as Cambridge United come to town in the rescheduled fixture.

“Cambridge United are a decent team. They did not deserve to lose by the only goal of the game to Peterborough on Saturday. It will be another tough game, but we are looking forward to it. The supporters at The Lamex Stadium on Saturday were outstanding vocally, we will need more of the same”.

“Neil Harris has gone but the operating manual is still at Cambridge. He has given them an identity and way to play, that is what I expect”.

Jamie Reid and Luther James-Wildin missed out on Saturday’s win after picking up knocks against Derby, but they remain doubtful for tomorrow night.

“It is unlikely that either will make it. I think the game comes 48 hours too early for them and it will be zero risk”.

Tomorrow night will be our biggest home crowd of the season so far, with over 7,000 expected at The Lamex Stadium.

“The Lamex Stadium is always a great place for football and atmosphere. Our supporters turn up and really back the lads. They have been with us since the first day I arrived.

“We are trying so hard to get into the playoff places and if we can deliver that, the lads will deserve recognition for a long, long time. We must never forget we started the season as favourites for relegation, so let us respect but enjoy this special journey!”
