Away Days: Shrewsbury Town

12 January 2024

Stevenage travel to Shropshire this Saturday for a Sky Bet League One clash with Matthew Taylor’s Shrewsbury…

Boro will be looking to return to winning ways this Saturday after being knocked out of the FA Cup last Saturday against Maidstone United. Steve Evans’ side sit seventh in the table and have the opportunity to return to the play-off places with three points this weekend.

Stevenage have won 12 of their 25 league games this season as they continue to defy the odds. The reverse fixture between Boro and the Shrews occurred at the start of the season as Steve Evans’ guided his men to a 2-0 victory. Aaron Pressley and Jamie Reid grabbed the goals.

The Opposition

Shrewsbury’s campaign has been fairly mediocre so far, as they sit 15th in the table after winning just nine of their 26 league games. In December, they went on a four-game losing streak, in which they scored just one goal.

Despite this bad run of form, their fortunes changed in their most recent league clash on New Years’ Day. Shrewsbury welcomed Fleetwood Town to The Croud Meadow and earned a 3-1 victory, with Nohan Kenneh, Chey Dunkley and Jordan Shipley grabbing the goals.

Shrewsbury have scored the least amount of goals in League One this season, with 17 in 26 games. Their top scorers, Daniel Udoh and Ryan Bowman have four to their name.

The Manager

Matthew Taylor was given the role of Shrewsbury Head Coach in the summer as his second senior management role. His first was with Walsall, where he spent less than a year.

As a player, Taylor made over 100 appearances for Luton Town, Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers, before appearing for West Ham, Burnley, Northampton and Swindon.

The Stadium

Croud Meadow has been the home of Shrewsbury Town since it opened in 2007. The ground has a capacity of 9,877, with a record attendance of 10,210 being set in 2014. Away supporters are typically housed in the DMOS People Stand (North Stand) which holds a capacity of 1,796.

Officials

Thomas Kirk has been appointed Match Referee for tomorrow’s game, with Ollie Williams and Thomas Harty as Assistants, and Peter Wright as Fourth Official. Kirk has dished out 77 yellow cards and one red in 19 games this season.
